Health care aide vs LPN in Alberta

Both are regulated by the same Alberta college, and they are not the same job. The difference that matters is scope: what each role is permitted to decide, and what each must be assigned.

The one-sentence answer

A health care aide supports daily living and follows a care plan under supervision. A licensed practical nurse practises nursing, which includes assessment, medication administration and clinical judgment. The HCA role is defined by what it is assigned; the LPN role includes deciding.

They now share a regulator

Since the HCA Regulation came into force on 2 February 2026, both occupations are regulated by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta, the CLHA. The college previously regulated licensed practical nurses alone, as the CLPNA. Its name now carries both.

Sharing a regulator does not merge the roles. It means both are held to registration, renewal and continuing-competence requirements, and that a complaint about either is handled by the same body.

Scope, precisely

The clearest line runs through medication. The Alberta competency profile gives the health care aide competency as "provide medication assistance as assigned by a regulated health care professional". The word is assistance, and the qualifier is not decoration. An HCA does not administer, adjust or decide on medication. An LPN administers medication within the practical nursing scope.

The same pattern runs through the rest of the work. A health care aide observes, reports and documents to employer standards, and implements the client's care plan. Assessment, diagnosis and clinical judgment sit outside the role. See HCA scope of practice in Alberta for the full picture.

What each has to pass

A health care aide completes an approved Alberta programme delivering the Provincial Curriculum, registers with the CLHA as a provisional registrant, and passes the Alberta HCA Registration Examination: 100 multiple-choice questions, four options each, two hours, closed book, reported as pass or fail with no numeric score. Provisional registrants have one year and three attempts. See what the examination is.

A licensed practical nurse completes a practical nursing diploma programme and writes the national practical nurse registration examination. It is a different credential with a different syllabus, not a longer version of the same paper.

Choosing between them

Two honest considerations rather than a recommendation.

The health care aide route is substantially shorter and reaches paid, regulated work sooner. If you hold a provisional permit through the substantial equivalence route you may work under supervision while waiting to write the examination, so the earning window and the study window overlap.

Practical nursing is a longer programme and a wider scope. If the part of care you want is the deciding rather than the doing, the HCA role will not grow into it, because the boundary is regulatory rather than a matter of experience.

On wages, hours and demand, check Alberta's own occupational profiles at alis.alberta.ca rather than any third-party figure, including ours. Those numbers move, and a stale wage quoted confidently is the kind of thing people make a two-year decision on.

Moving from HCA to LPN

It is a common path and it is an application, not a promotion. Practical nursing is a separate credential, so it means being admitted to and completing a practical nursing programme. Some institutions recognise prior health care aide education or experience toward admission or credit. What is recognised differs by provider, so ask the institution directly.

Working as a health care aide first is a reasonable way to find out whether the setting suits you before committing years to a diploma, and the practice is real rather than theoretical.

If you are sitting the HCA examination

CareAide is exam preparation for the Alberta HCA Registration Examination specifically. It is not a course, it does not certify anyone, and it is not preparation for practical nursing registration. It is free to start with no card required, which is enough to judge whether the practice is any good. See how to become a health care aide in Alberta for the full pathway.

Common questions

What is the difference between a health care aide and an LPN in Alberta?

Scope is the real difference. A health care aide assists with daily living and follows the client's care plan under the supervision of a regulated professional, and provides medication assistance only as assigned by one. A licensed practical nurse practises nursing: assessment, medication administration and clinical judgment are within an LPN's scope and outside an HCA's. Both are now regulated by the same Alberta college.

Are health care aides and LPNs regulated by the same college in Alberta?

Yes, since 2 February 2026. Both are regulated by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta, the CLHA. The college was previously the CLPNA and regulated licensed practical nurses alone; health care aide regulation brought both occupations under one regulator.

Which is faster to start, health care aide or LPN?

Health care aide, by a wide margin. An HCA completes an approved program delivering the Provincial Curriculum and then passes the Alberta HCA Registration Examination, a single 100-question paper. Practical nursing is a diploma programme measured in years, followed by the national practical nurse registration examination. Confirm current programme lengths with the institution rather than a third-party summary.

Can a health care aide become an LPN in Alberta?

Yes, and it is a common route. Practical nursing is a separate credential rather than a promotion, so it means applying to and completing a practical nursing programme. Some institutions recognise prior health care aide education or experience. Ask the specific institution what it grants, because the answer differs between providers.
