The hardest part of the Alberta HCA exam, in 13,200 practice answers
On our practice exams, Alberta health care aide candidates score lowest in Safety and in Provision of Care. Those are also the two domains that carry the most marks on the Alberta HCA Registration Examination. This is practice data from our own learners, not results from the real exam.
What the numbers are
Between 28 June and 6 October 2026, learners on CareAide Prep finished 132 full practice exams for the Alberta HCA Registration Examination. Each one is 100 questions, so that is 13,200 answers from 38 learners. For every practice exam we record the share of questions answered correctly in each of the six domains.
| Domain | Mean score on full practice exams | Share of marks on the real exam |
|---|---|---|
| Safety | 84.5% | 16 to 20% |
| Provision of Care | 86.3% | 25 to 35% |
| Health Across the Life Span | 89.2% | 11 to 15% |
| Communication | 91.3% | 12 to 16% |
| Collaborative Care | 91.8% | 8 to 12% |
| HCA Role and Responsibility | 91.9% | 13 to 17% |

The same order shows up in short quizzes
Learners also take short quizzes on one domain at a time. Over the same period there were 193 of these, covering 4,745 questions. The order is nearly the same, with the same two domains at the bottom.
| Domain | Questions answered | Answered correctly |
|---|---|---|
| Provision of Care | 1,380 | 82.6% |
| Safety | 1,160 | 84.1% |
| Health Across the Life Span | 700 | 88.1% |
| Communication | 730 | 88.4% |
| Collaborative Care | 375 | 90.4% |
| HCA Role and Responsibility | 400 | 91.5% |

Why it matters: the weakest domains are the heaviest
According to the blueprint in the AHRE Candidate Handbook, Safety and Provision of Care together make up between 41% and 55% of the marks on the Alberta HCA Registration Examination. A candidate who is a few points weaker there loses more marks than the same weakness would cost in Collaborative Care, which is 8 to 12% of the exam.
We cannot prove from these numbers why the two domains are harder. One reasonable explanation is that they hold most of the questions that ask what to do first: a resident who is choking, a client found on the floor, a change in someone's condition during care. Those questions have more than one sensible-looking answer, and the right one depends on following the care plan and reporting to the regulated health care professional rather than acting alone.
What to do with this
- Check your own numbers before you trust ours. A group average says nothing about one person. Take a full practice exam and look at your own six scores.
- Put your extra time where the marks are. If you are level across the domains, Safety and Provision of Care still deserve the most practice, because they are worth the most.
- Practise the first-action questions. For each one, ask what keeps the person safe right now, what the care plan says, and who you report to.
The exam blueprint page lists every domain and its weighting, and the Provision of Care guide goes through the largest domain in detail.
What this data cannot tell you
- It is not the real exam. These are scores on our practice questions. The real exam reports pass or fail only, so a practice score does not predict a result.
- It is a small group. 38 learners finished a full practice exam in this period. The picture may change as more do.
- The learners chose themselves. People who sign up for practice software and finish a 100-question paper are not a sample of every candidate in Alberta.
We will update this page when the numbers move.
