HCA exam accommodations in Alberta: how to request them, and why early matters
Accommodations are arranged before you are booked, not on the day. That single fact is the one most candidates learn too late, and it is the reason this page exists.
Ask early, because the sequence is fixed
The examination is administered at Meazure Learning test centres, and testing windows are allocated after registration. An accommodation changes what has to be arranged at the centre, which means it has to be known before a seat is assigned rather than after. A request made once you have a booking is a request to change a booking, and that is slower.
The practical rule is to raise it at the same time you begin registration, not once everything else is settled. The College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta is the body to ask, and the current process and evidence requirements are published on their site. Confirm them there rather than relying on any third party, including this page, because process details change and the consequence of following an old instruction is a lost testing window.
What to have ready before you ask
Requests move faster when the supporting material is already in hand. In general terms that means documentation from a qualified professional that describes the functional impact rather than only the diagnosis. What an assessor needs to know is what you cannot do under standard conditions and what would remove that barrier, expressed in terms of the test: additional time, a separate room, a reader, or breaks that do not consume the two hours.
Documentation that says only what a condition is called leaves the assessor to guess at the accommodation. Documentation that says what happens to you in a two hour timed reading task, and what has previously worked, is answerable.
Prepare for the accommodation you will actually get
This is the part that is genuinely within your control, and it is routinely skipped. If you are granted additional time, your practice should use that additional time, because pacing is a habit and the habit you rehearse is the one that shows up. A candidate who practises at seventy two seconds a question and then sits with double time often uses the extra badly, second guessing answers that were right the first time.
If you are granted breaks, rehearse stopping and restarting. Returning to a scenario question after a pause and picking up the thread is a skill, and the first time you do it should not be in the examination.
What an accommodation does not change
The content and the standard are the same. The examination is one hundred multiple choice questions reported as pass or fail, with a strengths and weaknesses graph and no access to the questions themselves. The blueprint proportions are the same, so Provision of Care remains the largest domain at 25 to 35 per cent of the marks and Applying still carries between 53 and 73 per cent. An accommodation removes a barrier that is unrelated to competence; it does not alter what competence means.
It is worth saying plainly that requesting one is not an admission of weakness, and it is not unusual. The purpose of the examination is to measure whether you can do the job safely. Anything that gets in the way of measuring that accurately is noise, for the College as much as for you.
If you are unsure whether to ask
Ask. The cost of asking and being told the standard conditions are appropriate is an email. The cost of not asking is sitting a paper that measures something other than what you know, and then waiting to sit it again. Attempts are limited, so a wasted one is expensive in a way that a question never is.

Common questions
When should I request exam accommodations?
At the start of Alberta HCA registration, before a testing window is assigned. Accommodations change what has to be arranged at the Meazure Learning test centre, so a request made after booking becomes a request to change a booking, which is slower and can cost you a window.
What documentation is needed for an accommodation request?
Documentation from a qualified professional describing functional impact rather than only a diagnosis: what happens under standard timed conditions and what has previously removed the barrier. Confirm the current evidence requirements with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta, since these are set and revised by them.
Does an accommodation change the exam itself?
No. On the Alberta HCA Registration Examination the content, the blueprint proportions and the pass or fail standard are identical with or without an accommodation. It removes a barrier unrelated to competence; it does not change what is being measured.
